RARE WAX BY FUNKFREAK SB

Mad Money Morv and Dj Cubic are members of the German Funkfreaks chapter. Both got into records more that 20 years ago. Their collections encompass a wide range of music styles, spanning from Doo-Wop and 60's Soul to Afro, Jazz, Rap, and more. However, the largest portion of their collections consists of boogie funk records. Over the years of collecting and Djing, they've come across a number of records that are not everyday finds. Both of the Funkfreaks will present four of their favorite rare boogie 7" records.

DJ CUBIC'S FAVORITES

Lee Moore / Get off 7" (Score Records - 1980)

DJ Debo, one of the Funkfreaks founding members, introduced me to this amazing record when he visited us in Saarbrücken in 2015. I immediately began searching for a copy and was fortunate enough to find one. Everything in this track fits together flawlessly. A perfect example of an early 80's boogie banger and one of my favorite tracks. In 2016, Past Due released a reissue of this gem, but I believe this one has also become expensive.

Larry Dunn Featuring Luisa / Groove Patrol Vs. Benjamins Bin Jammin 7"

(Source Productions - 1986)

This one is a heavy double sider from 'Earth Wind and Fire' founding member Larry Dunn featuring his wife Luisa. It's hard to choose a favorite track on this record, although I personally believe that 'Groove Patrol' is the slightly stronger song.  Both tracks feature a heavy, unique synth bass alongside great vocals and a captivating groove. What more could you ask for from a boogie record?

Sally / Erotica Vs. Rado-Keno 7" (Rabbit Records - year unknown)

Boogie wasn't very popular in Germany, and therefore, German boogie records are often quite rare and hard to find. This particular one is no exception to this. It was released on a small independent label created specifically for the two releases by Sally. I have a particular fondness for unusual records, and the obscure German vocals in 'Erotica' with the French hook immediately triggered my interest when I first came across this song.

Midnight Sky /  Captain Midnight Vs. So Real 7" (Skylife Production Co - 1983)

This one also appeared on a small independent label and was the only record released by Midnight Sky. Unfortunately, not much about this group is known to me. I assume it was some kind of unique collaboration, as the members were also involved in other well-known projects, such as 'Was (Not Was)'' and 'The George Duke Band'. For me, it was the bassline in 'So Real' that got stuck in my head and led me to immediately search for this record.

MAD MONEY MORV'S FAVORITES

Marshall Titus / Take A Chance On The Feeling 7" (Budwiser Showdown WBMX 102.7 FM - 1984)

I will start with a Funk Freaks classic. Take A Chance On The Feeling is a hard slapping boogie track with a dominating heavy synth bassline, released by the legendary Budwiser Showdown, which was an American music contest in the 80s where little known artists competed for record deals and which brought a lot of collectable records to light. Among others this amazing 45. Titus, a soul singer from Chicago who is now living in Hamburg, Germany, has a powerful voice thats perfectly harmonizing with the dark and brute bassline of this killer. A must-have!

Neeon / Tripp Me Out 7" (ARTX Records - 1986)

Tripp Me Out is a P-Funk influenced boogie track with weird synths and electric guitar parts. It was written by Robert Hughes, who released several records under different aliases on ARTX Records, a sublabel of Lee Anthony's legendary label, True Soul. An Arkansas-based label that most Funk and Soul collectors may know since the releases of the True Soul Vol. 1 and 2 compilations by Now-Again Records/Stones Throw Records.

Fresh / Get On The Groove Vs. Our Love 7" (MVS - 1987)

This one is most likely one of my rarest diggs. I bought it for a very low price at a sellout of a local record store. To this day,  i coudn´t figure out anything about the band or musicians. MVS appears to be a very small label from northern Germany, which mostly released traditional music and private releases. But this 45 is a funky one. Get on the Groove is a midtempo obscure boogie style track, that I featured on my Boogie Royale Mixtape, serving as the first track on the A side.

Soft Ware / Let Your Body Do The Talking Vs. Love + One = You 7" (Peerless - 1983)

This 45 features two dope tracks in an obscure postdisco electrofunk style with some carabean influences. It was released on Peerless Records, one of Mexico´s leading independent labels and it took me a while to find a copy. The songs are wirtten by Stephen Singer and Heyward Collins, who was a former executive producer at the american jazz label Collins Calliope. The arrangements sound a little bit dirty. But that's what makes it so interesting to me. Dirt makes the Funk!
