JOTON
Jose Ángel aka JOTON belongs to the leading figures on the Spanish underground scene. His career began in the early 2000s and his work was released on Planet Rhythm, RAW RAW, Prophecy, Labrynth, Modularz, Quartz Rec, Skryptöm just to name a few. His sound is raw, hypnotic with dark melodies and rave-influenced vibes. The charismatic producer and New Rhythmic label owner continues to transmit his passion for techno by teaching production techniques for many years now. Today, he’s working on a new album to mark his 25 years of dedication to electronic music.
Where do you come from?
I come from a family that has always valued art, though not necessarily from a family of artists. I have no formal training in music, with formal studies in music theory and production. However, I have dedicated more than half of my life to experimenting and learning in a self-taught manner. Currently, I offer online courses to students around the world and collaborate with some of the most important schools in the country, as well as with brands like Arturia.
Who are your main influences?
My main influences include a mix of artists from different genres and eras. In electronic music, I am inspired by Aphex Twin, Surgeon or Jeff Mills
Your first approach to Djing?
My first encounter with DJing was at a local party when I was about 16 years old. From that moment, I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to this, and 25 years later, here we are.
What prompted you to become a producer?
The need to express my own ideas and emotions through music led me to production. I wanted to create something unique that reflected my artistic vision and not just play other people's music.
Your favorite equipment in the studio?
My favorite piece of equipment in the studio is undoubtedly the Access Virus synthesizer. It allows me to experiment with sounds and textures in a very organic and personal way. I also greatly appreciate my DAW and the collection of plugins I use, especially a lot of Arturia lately.
What is the philosophy behind New Rhythmic?
The philosophy behind New Rhythmic is constant exploration and innovation. We aim to push the boundaries of techno and offer music that is not only powerful and danceable but also sonically interesting and complex. Every day, I listen to all the demos I receive for the label. Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to discover some of the artists who are now important figures in the techno scene.
Why did you decide to become a production teacher?
I decided to become a production teacher to share my knowledge and passion for music. I started teaching 15 years ago and have had students of all levels, from beginners to advanced. I teach my classes from my studio, with 90% of my students being online.
What is your favorite record store?
My favorite record store is Hard Wax in Berlin. It has an incredible selection of electronic music and an atmosphere that inspires creativity.
Your definition of Industrial Techno?
For me, techno is a fusion of pounding rhythms, raw textures, and atmospheres. It's music that challenges and stimulates both the body and the mind.
One of your tracks which best represents you?
One of the tracks that best represents me is “Sendice.” It combines industrial elements with a melodic structure, reflecting my style and musical vision.
For you, a quality track in 3 words?
Innovation, energy, depth.
Your top 3 venues we should know in Spain?
Industrial Copera in Granada, Laut in Barcelona, and Fabrik in Madrid.
Our future in one sentence?
Music will continue to be the universal language that connects us and allows us to explore new dimensions.
If you could teleport yourself for 1 hour, where would you choose to go?
I would teleport to a Jeff Mills set at Tresor in Berlin in the 90s to experience again that pure, revolutionary energy of techno at its peak.
