ED MOTTA / TOC TOC
Ed Motta, renowned as one of Brazil’s greatest vinyl collectors, has released yet another album. Keyboards and his insane voice are the main ingredients. While the tracks' consistent style might create an impression of repetition, that illusion vanishes upon the first listen; no two snare drums sound alike, and the compositions are incredibly subtle. When it comes to funk, the nephew of the legendary Tim Maia is undeniably an expert. Just recall "Vamos Dançar"—one of his early hits from 1988—which already showcased his potential. Nearly forty years and some fifteen albums later, Ed Motta still manages to surprise us. Even though he composes solo using only a drum machine and a bass synthesizer, the production is incredible. "Toc Toc" reveals his skills as a songwriter and producer from a fresh perspective. It sounds modern, yet draws on numerous musical influences, nodding to the likes of Cameo and 80s electro-funk beats. The eleven-track set opens with "Eu Quero Ser Feliz," a perfect example of the fusion between past and present. Ultimately, aside from the first four tracks—which lend themselves to smooth, glamorous dancing—the tempos are generally slow. "Beth," with its hip-hop vibe, provides the perfect beat for a guest MC. The pace slows further with "Não Tem Contradição," a melancholic, soulful song in which he expresses a desire for liberation. The keyboard tones lean closer to a piano sound, while the bass work remains powerful—as evidenced by the outro of "Voltei Pra Mim" (and the album itself), featuring a sustained note. The frequencies engineering are remarkable. With minimal instrumentation, he proves that his music has a bright future. Thank you for continuing to sing in Portuguese; life feels sweeter when listening to you! Kudos for creating with total independence—it’s not something everyone can do, and it proves your talent, if any proof were needed. Thanks to the quality of your songwriting, you are one of the few artists capable of reconciling me with pop music. In reality, your album transcends genre; the title track sweeps us away on a fantastic, joyful, P-Funk-infused interstellar journey—a sort of love letter to the beauty of the world. Ed Motta is knocking at your door with an album certified phat by Star Wax.
