DJ Husky is a disco and house lover who produces soulful and deep house tracks based in Sydney. He and Yogi are behind the Random Soul. DJ Husky work can be found on his own labels Random Soul Recordings and Bobbin' Head Music, as well as labels such as Salted Music, Purple Music, LouLou, Nurvous, Guesthouse, TMRW Music, Fool's Paradise and Soul Divine to name a few. Interview on the occasion of his new EP 'Hold Me' with singer Rona Ray.

Where do you come from?

Sydney, Australia.

Your first experience with Djing?

Hard to remember the date, but I was on a boat cruise party and there was someone playing music to people dancing using two discman Cd players and a mixer. I was hooked.

Your first experience with beatmaking?

Well this took a lot longer than Djing. As there is so much to learn in the DAW about how to actually do half the things needed to make a track. But after looking over my production partners shoulders - Yogi from Random Soul, I was ready and bought my own studio computer/speakers, etc, in 2006.

What comes to your mind if I say zen?

A Holiday without the kids!

Disco or house?

I was probably more into house as a clubber and DJ, but now I am growing more fond of Disco.

What are your favourite record stores?

Amoeba in LA is just heaven, but now the Juno.uk online store is just really easy.

One of your track which best represents you today and why?

Probably my recent ‘You Ain’t Breakin My Heart’ single on Fool’s Paradise with Ridney featuring XIRA. It’s a chunky disco house record with an original vocal on top. I love throwing back to classic sounds but also love having something fresh and new on top to make it feel new. (Stream it below)

When you're digging for vinyl, what are you obsessed with?

I love looking for classic disco and rare records that I have in my digital collection. It is rare that I buy much ‘new’ music on vinyl, unless it’s a real banger. 

Which format do you prefer the most?

I play a lot on USB, so have grown comfortable there. But I enjoy the challenge of mixing records every now and then. 

Your top 3 venues in Sydney?

I play a lot of great rooftop bars with amazing views. But I tend to love the one’s closer to the water, like The Newport & Manly Wharf Bar. I have also played some amazing gigs at The Greenwood in North Sydney. 

What is your favorite application?

On my phone? I’m probably on Instagram mostly.

The Dj that puts you crazy systematically?

Mark Farina, I always enjoy watching Mark play.

What comes to your mind if I tell you design? 

Savaya in Bali. It’s an amazing club on the side of a cliff. Just an incredible spot and how they built that place is beyond me!

Airline Pilot. I love flying, or at least the have admiration for those that do. I find it fascinating.
