BIG BOSS MAN "DAS FREAK" 7INCH
Even before the drums start, “Das Freak” sounds like the soundtrack of a Blaxploitation movie; the uptempo beat takes you through the streets of Harlem in the early 70s at high speed. Yet, Big Boss Man is an English band that recorded these two songs in the town of Newbury. Though fairly unknown in France, Big Boss Man is nevertheless a prolific outfit, that has been blasting stages in England, Spain, Netherlands... Indeed, Big Boss Man’s music may sound familiar to you because the track “Party 7” was used for the international Nike World Football ’06 campaign with Thierry Henry and Eric Cantana. Since 1998 the group has released four studio albums exclusively on Blow Up Records. But this new 7 inch, with which the band announced its new album “Bossin' Around”, is released by young label Spinout Nuggets. The band’s core lineup, Nasser Bouzida on percussions and Hammond, Trevor Harding on guitar, Badger Burgess on bass, and Desmond Rogers on drums, is completed by the heavy talents of Frank Grillo on trumpet, Nasser Bouzida on drums, and Simon Curry on saxophone and flute. On side B “Das Freak version” swerves deeper into disco territory, this one is for the party harders, battle DJs, and breakdancers. It sounds different because percussions are more prominently featured, which gives it a more Latin touch. The keyboards are less present, which better highlights the raw bass and kick. Both tracks in these versions are available exclusively on this 45 rpm limited to 500 copies because the album offers an extended version of more than five minutes of the side A. This vinyl is “certified fat by Star wax”, for freaks fans of 60s R'n'B, jazzy Soul-Funk, Latin vibes, and vintage keyboards. In addition to the two tracks taken from this 7 inch, listen to the full Lp “Bossin' Around” using the player below.
